Supporting LATINX Queer Stories

60% of Latinx LGBT young people reported that someone tried to convince them to change their sexual orientation or gender identity, with 39% indicating that this pressure came from a parent or caregiver. 39% of Latinx LGBT young people reported discrimination based on their race/ethnicity in the past year.

INITIAL PROJECT IDEA

Our initial vision was to do something involving latinx queer presence in media. Any successful project needs a good hook, and as a sort of conversation starter, we decided to make a video showcasing queer presence in media, and play it back on a Gameboy Advance. The point of this was to showcase the sheer accessibility of media in the modern era, and how despite this there is still a lack of representation for queer latinx people.

WHAT IS SLQS?

SLQS is a website that allows queer Latinx people to interact with one another by sharing stories through audio, word document, or pinning a location and writing a caption on an interactive map. Similar to other websites such as The StoryCorps Archive and QUEERING THE MAP, SLQS aims to bring people together and celebrate queer Latinx joy while also empathizing with the struggles.
